But before taking the data in Table 6 as confirming this view, it is important to keep in mind that immigrant groups differed in characteristics other than age that would also be expected to affect criminal involvement. We carefully assemble population denominators from census data tabulations and microdata samples of census records, adjusting for mortality and other demographics to provide the best estimates for the prison census numbers, taking advantage of the fact that we have much richer population data available to us than the Commissions had at the time.
