Oh man. So yeah, you just go I dont know, its hard to say why you dont quit sometimes but it was just. For me probably, the best years during the Postal era was kind of when we were calling ourselves The Bad News Bears. It began the moment he accepted a "red egg'' -- a testosterone pill handed to him by a team doctor in early 1997. CT: Whats the sport going to look like in ten years? You couldnt ride all the way through and a lot of challenging weather. So you felt like you were special, you were doing something, you were getting ahead of the competition by doing this. So we coach a lot of people these days, we have them do a lot of 40/20s. You know we were kind of privy to that information early on, where a lot of individuals werent. I was able to train really hard and all that. He staunchly maintained his innocence for most of that time and spent more than $1 million trying to tear apart USADA's case against him before an about-face that was first prompted by a federal subpoena. I know Alex Gallego. But yeah, it was just a little bit of luck. CT: Grinding our teeth off.

Its basically like your investor advisatory law exam. So many times he has finished a race severalminutes behind the leaders when it would have been easier to climb intoa team car and go home.If his career has proven nothing else, its that cycling is a humblingand unforgiving sport. We knowthis because our dog Tugboat faced the need for a transfusion in June.He had been bleeding internally and had lost over half his blood supply.When the veterinarian recommended a transfusion we agonized over the optionfor the better part of week. And then, Im doing some work for a financial group down in Denver called Black Swift Group. A week in western Ireland, I did that. The beginning of the race sometimes I would just be suffering but Id just keep putting one foot in front of the other so to speak and by the end of the race Id still be there and a lot of these guys who are I felt like more talented than me would eventually give up. Back in my time, it felt like there were a lot of guys that didnt train that hard and really work on stuff. Some involve his eyewitness accounts of alleged cheating by his former team leader, Lance Armstrong.

Grinding my teeth, yeah. There was an individual event and then a two-person team. Thats what I felt like. I didnt really do anything, really, athletically, besides walking my dogs. But weve been grateful for every opportunityhes been provided through racing and have made the most of what I oftenrefer to as one incredible adventure.After ten years of working for an advertising agency back in BostonI left my job to join Tyler full time in Europe. How could Armstrong possibly have gotten away with it? Im so removed from the sport. Super effective and you should do them. Double-edged sword of sure. Initial reaction to "The Secret Race" is apt to focus on Tyler versus Lance, a credibility war between two men who were teammates, friends and finally rivals. He won a Tour de France stage with a broken collarbone and ground his teeth down in pain. CT: How did you pick Missoula?

He dragged me around. Winning alone was pretty cool and I was out in front for a long time.

You worked so hard to get there youre at the top of your game, in the biggest race in the world, you cant give up. Simultaneously, they dropped to the floor and hid.

The outpouring of support hasbeen overwhelming and is appreciated more than you can imagine. And theres obviously the doping side and all that. When the book [The Secret Race] came out there was a lot of interest in me sharing my story, so I go around and talk about the good, the bad, mostly the ugly. CT: I was listening to you on another podcast and you said one of your superpowers is pain. Been there done that. CT: I just crashed and broke my collarbone, and you very famously broke your collarbone. Armstrong has yet to give an inch in his denials. Where does that come from?

Luigi Cecchini. But it was just because he dragged me around and I remember how to draft, I still remember that. Yeah I have no idea. We can talk about it now or later. Who knows?

Its helped me a lot.

I would say thats probably my biggest my biggest gift I was I guess born with was that, but its probably a blessing and a curse too, right? And you had to stay together with your teammate. CT: I heard you been doing a lot of yoga.

"We all did this ourselves and made our choices, and I don't want people to feel bad for me personally "It all happened so slowly and organically. CT: You ever try to rationalize that pain?

It was clear that success back home did not guaranteesuccess in Europe.For the first time in his life he was told he was over-weight, didnttrain hard enough, didnt eat right, wasnt dedicated enough. Thiswas pretty shocking considering he had been a successful skier, soccerplayer, sail boat racer, little leaguer and cyclist all his life. The racing season is nearly ten months long.Peaks and valleys in performance are as prevalent as peaks and valleyson course profiles.This season has been no exception.

I mean, its helped I think in my studies just recently. But its neat, the good, the bad, the ugly. In the Tour, every Tour, I did eight Tours. Understandably so, people were pissed off. Nowadays, if I couldve been racing in these days, maybe I wouldnt be that good anymore. It progressed through his initiation to the inner circle of Armstrong's mountain helpers, who boosted their hematocrit levels with EPO and transfusions and worked under the guidance of his trainer, Michele Ferrari. But hopefully, thats well beyond us. The next day, he got back on his bike and rode a 100-mile flat stage. But Tylertook the advice of his new mentors, and as he would say stepped uphis dedication and focus.Tylers steady progression over the last eight seasons here in Europehas been a result of his ability to put cycling first in his life. I decided to go this route, and I'm not going to hide from it.

They pop out once in a while so its a pain in the butt. But yeah, my first thing I started doing was probably yoga and helped me get mentally, physically it was fantastic. He was out of Canada. He was the guy who started the 40/20s.

The way we were training back in those days, everybodys doing that now. I love yoga.

Your weight. Like I would never have won Liege-Bastogne-Liege without the 40/20 work that Luigi Cecchini taught me. We went to college together, raced on the University of Colorado cycling team, and he owns a bike shop here in town. And then, right as cycling was beginning to understand the breadth and depth of its doping problem, he wrote a book that told all. It motivated all of us. CT: Question for you, mechanical doping, remember when that cyclocross female racer got caught with a motor. My brothers pretty tough, like I said, my parents are pretty tough, my sister. Every Tour Id die a thousand deaths whether I was in the front or in the back. Ive mellowed out a lot. Tyler accepts this. So in a way its like Yeah, they can take it all away if they want. There was a lot of stuff going on there and I felt like it was becoming a bit of a fishbowl. CT: Do you find that in your endeavors now, like when youre studying and paddle boarding and bikepacking, do you live your life in a similar vein? Its a tricky scene, its a tricky scene, theres a lot of pressure on these young kids to race their bikes super, super fast and if they cant get it done, theyll get replaced by somebody else so the pressures are still there.

He can succeedand fail without making excuses. I dont know. Hes on his laptop, five to six hours per day, studying for the Series 65, which will allow him to be a financial advisor.

He and his peers also perfected the art of rationalization, lying even to their own families or conscripting them to help keep their double lives separate. I dont know. CT: Do you ever get any itch to any competitive itch in you?

There were some years, when I first moved into Missoula, I didnt ride at all. This update is coming to you from Haven Hamilton. The weeks and months apartwere taking a toll on our relationship and it was clear that if Tyler wasgoing to excel overseas he needed an on-sight support network.Some people probably assume that athletes who make it to the professionallevel were born gifted, and that its the gift they possess that allowsthem to make a living doing what they love. And same with the doping. Cycling needs to be weeded out from the top. It was a wild Tour, but yeah weve seen less of that due to x y z. Im not sure exactly, but race radios have to do with it. In the autobiography, co-written with Daniel Coyle and obtained by ESPN.com this week, Hamilton restates in narrative form what he said he told a grand jury and federal investigators under oath in the summer of 2010 in the early stages of a criminal probe into the Armstrong-led U.S. So its like going back to school for me, I was studying this morning. CT: So whats exciting to you in the cycling world now, for yourself, and what are you looking forward to? Yeah, I mean the tours have become a little bit boring. If youre going by a scale of one to ten, youre going at a 9.5 effort for the 40 seconds then 20 seconds as easy as possible. And we had met a couple of years before he passed and he was super into bikepacking. A thousand deaths but you just keep sometimes itd be so hard, you were hoping that your bike would break and then you could skid to a stop. CT: I dont think people really understand what that means. At the end of the Tour, yeah. Yeah. I dont talk about it much and its not. I know the truth behind that victory and so I really dont talk about it a whole lot, I know it has an asterisk behind it.

Lets see, a few trips round here in Montana. CT: Ive got friends now that are racing in the World Tour. Although he hadbeen a successful cyclist in the U.S., he had to begin the process of provinghimself all over again. That Tour stage was pretty cool. We feared contamination and disease. '', Instead, Hamilton took aspirin and drank water and said goodbye to his dog. You start out tiptoeing through a little bit of mud and before you know it, you're up to your neck. He never recovered.His final days were more uncomfortable as a result.With the dangers of transfusing blood so fresh in our minds, it is ridiculousto think Tyler would consider taking another persons blood.When Tyler won his gold medal in Athens he achieved a life long dream.That medal is his payback for years of hard work and dedication.Tyler was asked to participate in the Vuelta because one of his teammateshad an injury that prevented him from going. Brutal. I think that happened stage 5 and so just riding through pain and grinding your teeth. There was that too, but we worked harder than anybody.

From that and the year before in the Giro dItalia, I broke the top of my arm and rode through that. Cheating occurred on such a massive scale, in such mundane packaging, that it receded into the landscape and became almost invisible. Even if you stop doping, youre still say you doped for three years and then you stop, youre still at a youve gained all this fitness and youve got all this residual fitness from it. Riders stored their drugs and blood bags nestled up against the veggies in the fridge. Hamilton said he was surprised when he learned Armstrong had opted not to contest the case against him.
